Grief involves painful feelings of sadness, loss, and helplessness, of being overwhelmed by circumstances beyond our control. The grief which accompanies or follows loss can be complicated, unpredictable, and scary. Grief can sometimes even be a trigger for depression. The grieving process is a natural response and it's often handled differently by different people. People move through the different stages of grief at different rates. Occasionally, a person will delay, exaggerate, prolong, or totally stifle their grief. To help cope with grief, it may be useful to learn ways of dealing with unhealthy responses to grief. Grief is a full body-and-mind process. Our bodies feel shock and sometimes physical pain, our reactions to friends and family can change, we may question our spiritual beliefs, or lose touch with our logic or emotions. These responses are natural and healthy.
